CASE STUDY – Kayak
Application via Surrey Canoe Club
MidasPlus purchased a Kayak for Chloe who has been diagnosed with ASD, ADH D, ODD.
Chloe attends the NHS’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. She is a registered disabled. She is a member of the talented athlete mentoring programme and a member of the paracanoe youth team at Surrey Canoe Club. When she is on the water she has said to her mum and the club that she doesn’t need to pretend to be someone else but she can be herself. She finds it very calming. Chloe is immature for her age, does not socialise easily with other people and she cannot cope with noise and busy sessions.
Surrey Canoe Club has provided the following reasonable adjustments for Chloe: providing a separate quiet place for her to change, giving her tasks to do by herself, providing one to one support when she is facing an anxiety or nervous meltdown, providing one to one coaching not just for kayaking but also for improving her social skills.
Despite the challenges she is facing, Chloe bas managed to achieve the 2 Star canoeing Award and she is now working towards the DofE Award. She has also won the London Youth Volunteer Award 2018 for starting the CHlo-Bow fundraising project for the paracanoe team. Her dream is to reach the Paralympics and the club and coaching team are supporting her to reach her goal.
